Going into the final 4 games of the season, only Carolina and Colorado can win. Colorado matches up against Pittsburgh in a back to back and Carolina. Carolina faces Buffalo and Colorado. Colorado must all but win out in order to take victory from Carolina's grasps, with a winless Pittsburgh looking to play the spoiler role and avoid the wooden spoon. On April 2nd, The Avalanche beat the Penguins in an afternoon affair - keeping their dreams alive until a critical double header on April 5th.
On April 5th, the Bob Boughner Bowl experienced it's first simultaneous double header. The Penguins hosted the Avs for the second time in a row, and the Sabres took on the Canes in Buffalo. Both games were close until the third, where Buffalo gave the Canes their first loss in the Bowl, and Colorado confirmed Pittsburgh's winless season. This result meant that the Avs and Canes at the end of the night were tied on points and even goal differential, leading to a final, winner takes all, championship game on April 16th in Denver.
April 16th arrived and the conclusion of the Boughner began - the Avs shot out to a 4 goal lead, but the scrappy canes kept pushing back, making it a two goal game on several occasions. But the Avs lead was too much for the Canes to overcome and the Avs finished the game 7-4, making them inaugural champions.
